Im Rahmen des "neugebahnten Weg[es] in der Kulturgeschichte", soll das Buch die Bedeutung der Geselligkeit unter historischen Fragestellungen nachzeichnen. Dabei geht es weniger um eine moralische Bewertung, sondern um die Darstellung anhand jener Quellen, welche die Urteile der Zeitgenossen verstehbar machen. Dies sind vor allem Dichter und Schriftsteller, denn letztlich gilt, daß jede Epoche aus ihrer Zeit verstanden werden muß: "Verspätete tugendhafte Entrüstung und retrospektive Moralpredigt halte ich für überflüssig, wie jedes Parteiergreifen in Dingen, wo ein Parteiergreifen nicht an der Zeit ist."
