**** Erster Band des Werkes "Geselligkeit der vornehmen europäischen Welt" wie es von Alexander von Gleichen-Rußwurm, Schillers letztem Urenkel (1865-1947), selbst dargestellt wird. Im Rahmen des "neugebahnten Weg[es] in der Kulturgeschichte", soll das Buch die Bedeutung der Geselligkeit unter historischen Fragestellungen nachzeichnen. Dabei geht es weniger um eine moralische Bewertung, sondern um die Darstellung anhand jener Quellen, welche die Urteile der Zeitgenossen verstehbar machen. Dies sind vor allem Dichter und Schriftsteller, denn letztlich gilt, daß jede Epoche aus ihrer Zeit verstanden werden muß: "Verspätete tugendhafte Entrüstung und retrospektive Moralpredigt halte ich für überflüssig, wie jedes Parteiergreifen in Dingen, wo ein Parteiergreifen nicht an der Zeit ist." (A. von Gleichen-Rußwurm im Vorwort, S. VII). (Cantikre). Kopfgoldschnitt leicht bestaubt, Rest unbeschnitten, rückwärtiger Einband außen etwas fleckig, besonders im oberen Bereich des Kapitals und am seitlichen Rand des Rückens ist der Leineneinband faserig und etwas löcherig, im vorderen Innendeckel geklebtes Exlibris, zwei Namensanstreichungen im Text mit Blei, Rücken gemustert und leicht ausgeblichen.
